John Sloan and Hortense Gordon assembled this collection of 19th-century Japanese Ukiyo-e prints during their many trips to France. Produced in pre-industrial Japan, the pictorial sensibilities these prints embody were highly influential on the development of European modernism, including the work of artists like Van Gogh and Gaugin.
Remarkably, the tradition of Ukiyo-e continues to be a touchstone for contemporary design and imagery. As we pursue our transition into the digital age, Ukiyo-e or “Images for the Floating World” has found new life within the current fascination with Manga and Anime.
