A Small Good Thing

Michaela Lucio
February 16 - March 26, 2022

Reception: Spring Mini Art Crawl March 25th, 2022 6-9 PM

ARTspace

Fleeting moments and ghostly memories, all fade away without mindful attention. 'A Small Good Thing' dives into an imagined history dreamed from photographs out-of family albums, predominantly from the childhood of the artist's mother. Considering the digital revolution's impact on families and the fragility of memory, this exhibition looks to slow down and explore the complicated tenderness of family life. Like a wisp of air, charged with emotion, it is all about the small good things.

Prism of Perception

Tracy Root
March 30 - May 14, 2022

Reception: April 1st, 2022 @ 7 - 9 PM

Tracy Root's new exhibition Prism of Perception presents work accomplished during the isolation of the recent pandemic lockdowns. It's not surprising then, that her paintings are often very personal, delving into feelings of longing, loss, and acceptance while pursuing a deep spiritual connection with the natural world.

Creating a visual language all her own, Root's highly developed painting style perceives the world as a kaleidoscope of geometric patterns, compositional movement, and colour. Interior and exterior worlds collide in these inviting canvases filled with memory and imagination.

An established member of the London art scene for many years, these paintings represent the first group of work completed as a new member of the Chatham-Kent community.

Elementoj

Sam Gunsar
May 18 - July 16, 2022

Reception: May 20, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In this new body of work titled "Elementoj," a reference is made to Esperanto, a manufactured language created with the hopes of establishing a single universal way to communicate. Translated into English as "elements," Gunsar pursues this nearly forgotten idea as a touchstone and a way to illustrate the cultural search for core beliefs in a world often swept up in an overabundance of information.

“Writing You From…”

Danielle Coleman and ART Monsters
June 30 - July 30, 2022

PUBLIC Window Gallery at ARTspace

“Writing you from…” is a PUBLIC window exhibition exploring nostalgia, optimism, and excitement of travel. As the pandemic has limited and impacted our ability to travel to new places, we often reflect on previous trips. We reflect on the places we have seen, the people we have met, and the stories we have created. Isolation has left folks of all ages making a wish list for destinations we wish to visit as we return to a new normal. Where to next? What’s there to see? What’s there to do!?

Works exhibited are created by Art Monster classes taught by art educator Danielle Coleman. Art Monsters capture memories, travel experiences, and hopes of future voyages through mixed media works.

Blood Ties

Mike Ondrovcik and Laurie Langford
October 12, 2022 – November 26, 2022

Opening Reception: October 14, 2022 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Then came COVID. Neither artist could go anywhere. It was frustrating. No searching. No road trips to shores or thrift stores. No adding to the art stash. Where, then, to focus?

Langford + Ondrovcik decided to take advantage of the months in COVID isolation and begin the tedious work of researching their roots. They would collect stories about a topic close to their hearts: Family. COVID magnified their need for connection. Who did they miss seeing? What family members should they get to know better? Who might they risk losing to the killer virus?

Blood Ties is about personal memory and family memory. It is about picking up pieces and fragments of truth and trying to understand the whole. It is about stories told and untold.

Unexpected answers and opportunities come our way when we step forward with our palms up. What if you allowed yourself to be vulnerable and released the tension in your hands? The simple act of flipping a clenched fist over and showing the sky the underside of your wrist while allowing your fingers to loosen can change an outcome. This is the posture of both releasing and receiving.
